How Much Does It Cost to Open a Cafe?
Cafes look cheaper than restaurants. The espresso machine is not the whole story.

What a cafe budget actually pays for
A cafe still has deposit, interiors, furniture, licences, signage, opening stock and a cash buffer. The distinctive lines are espresso equipment, grinders, water filtration, refrigeration for milk, and a lot of packaging if you do takeaway.
If you also serve a full kitchen menu, you are closer to a restaurant budget. Be honest about that before you sign.
Price the menu after you price the rent
A ₹120 cappuccino does not rescue a rent that needs 200 covers a day. Cost the drinks, then run break-even with your real fixed costs. If the daily order target looks unlike the street outside, change rent or concept — not the font on the menu.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is a cafe cheaper to open than a restaurant?
Sometimes, if the kitchen is small and seating is modest. High-street rent, imported machines and long fit-outs can erase that gap. Compare your own quotes, not a category stereotype.
