A sheet that is actually used

Columns that matter: item, category, unit, opening quantity, purchases, usage, wastage, closing quantity, purchase price, stock value, reorder level, supplier. Fill closing from a count, not from hope.

A spreadsheet works well when the operation is small. As order volume, staff and inventory complexity increase, automated inventory tracking can save substantial manual work. That is a later decision — not a reason to skip counting now.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do small restaurants need inventory software?

Not always. A short list counted twice a week can be enough. Software starts to earn its keep when the list is long, more than one person buys, or you cannot explain where last week’s chicken went.
