When Should a Restaurant Start Using POS?
Not on day one for everyone. Not never for everyone.
When a restaurant should move from pen and paper or Excel to POS: order volume, staff, inventory, payments and owner visibility — without pretending every small outlet must buy software tomorrow.

Signals the notebook is losing
- Daily orders high enough that totalling at close takes longer than service.
- Staff other than the owner handle cash, UPI and cards.
- Stock discrepancies show up weekly.
- You cannot see today’s sales unless you are in the shop.
- A second counter or a second outlet is no longer theoretical.
If none of that is true, manual management may still be sufficient. Use calculators and templates. Buy software when complexity, not marketing, asks for it.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Should a new restaurant buy POS before opening?
Only if you already know you will have multiple tenders, staff billing, or enough volume that a notebook will fail in week one. Many small openings can start simple and add software when the pain is real.
